UK-BASED contract manufacturing organisation (CMO) SCM Pharma has fought off stiff competition to be named the winner of the Cels Business for Life 2010 Export Award following the company's exceptional international growth over the last 12 months.
The Export Award, sponsored by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), was one of eight categories and recognised SCM Pharma for maximising opportunities to exploit and develop new markets and its outstanding performance in international trade.
Having demonstrated substantial growth in overseas earnings and commercial success, SCM Pharma will now go on to battle companies across the UK for a national prize.
A nine-strong team from the Northumberland-based sterile fill finish specialist was present at the glitzy award ceremony at the Assembly Rooms in Newcastle, with commercial director Graham Dotchin on hand to accept the award.
Graham said: "We are delighted to have received this award as it recongnises the hard work, commitment and dedication of every employee at SCM Pharma over the last year.
"Even though it has been a challenging environment to grow the business, we have managed to take our offering of manufacturing novel, difficult and dangerous drugs to new territories, flying the flag for the North East and significantly increase our export sales.
"This is a fantastic achievement for the business and I am honoured to accept the award on behalf of our outstandingly talented and passionate workforce," added Graham.
Over the last year, SCM Pharma has secured contracts in the USA and across Europe and is currently attempting to make inroads into the Japanese pharmaceutical market. After being named a finalist at the end of October, the CMO managed to pip the three other shortlisted firms to triumph.
With around 50 employees, SCM Pharma provides sterile and non-sterile production services to assist clients progressing drug products through clinical trials and also makes licensed drug products for customers that require low volume ongoing commercial supply.
